Problem

The following error occurs when installing SQL 2008 SQL 2008 R2 install error: is not a valid login, you do not have permission

Resolution

This problem occurs because the name of the computer is the same as the windows username. ie Computer name is John Doe and the current logged in user is also John Doe To resolve you will need to either change the name of the computer or login as a different user and then rerun the SQL 2008 R2 installation.
