Problem
Offset an overpayment/refund in the Tax year against the first Payment On Account
Resolution
This is a HMRC restriction in the software you cannot offset the overpayment/refund against your payments on account. Also, there is no boxes on the return to show this. However, once the return is sent to HMRC you can ask them to offset the refund against payments on account and they should be able to do this.
If the overpayment is less than the first payment on account – then it will offset automatically.
If the overpayment is higher than the first payment on account – then if will not be offset.
However, you can instead claim to reduce payments by going to: –
- Go to Administration in the top left-hand corner
- Claim to reduce payments
- A reason must be selected, and you cannot reduce one payment, both must be reduced.
